I returned Sunday from a fantastic trip through Switzerland. What an incredibly picturesque country.

The route we took was the following:

Day 1: Flew into Zurich, train down to Chur

Day 2: Glacier Express from Chur to Zermatt

Day 3: Train from Zermatt to Bern, then hired a car to drive to Interlaken

Day 4: Stayed in Interlaken and surrounding areas

Day 5: Dropped the car off in Lucerne

Day 6: Train to Zurich from Lucerne and flew back

Having now done the trip, we don't think we'd have done the car hire. We had an issue with collection (would never recommend using Sixt Central Bern Station), but also the trains and buses are so well connected across the Grindelwald/Interlaken region and between the cities that it's not needed.

While Switzerland is expensive, the big thing if you want to save some of your spending money is to not eat out often. A meal for 2 with a drink will likely cost you about 90CHF/£ on average. Going to Coop/Migros, you can get lunch for 5-10 each. Other than food or cable cars, I actually thought any spend was similar to what I spend in London (I know that's not the cheapest place to compare to).

Lucerne was absolutely beautiful, as well as the mountains in the Grindelwald region naturally. Bern was also a lovely city, but I was less fussed by Zurich, although that was probably more in comparison to the other cities. I've been to many worse cities.
