Semana Santa in Seville

| Spent 4 days in Seville during Semana Santa. I didn't think it will be possible for me to get a culture shock in Europe anymore but these celebrations has to be one of the most mind blowing things I've ever seen. The possessions feature 1000 Nazarenos upwards, apparently the Macarena neighbourhood had 5000 nazarenos in their possession. La Madruga on Thursday is the busiest, starting just after midnight, posessions finishing around 1pm. People camp out all night to see Nazarenos and the floats. when the floats come around everyone goes quiet, you can hear pin drop, people even shush each other. The atmosphere is electric, it really was an amazing experience. I would highly recommend visiting this time. Daytime temperatures are between 22-27C, and you can still visit the sites during the day. From 3pm onwards the town is gridlocked with the possessions until the early hours of the morning. Restaurants are busier than normal but there are plenty of places. Generally mains are 13 to 25 Euros, Tapa size plates are 3 to 10 Eur, Beer 5+ Eur, Spirits 12+Eur No taxies in the only town from 12pm, so transportation can be an issue. Getting around on foot is also challenging, roads are often closed so even short distances can take 40-50 minutes. Seville is a town of about 700k people but during Semana Santa there are about 1.5m people in town, so prepare accordingly. [link] [comments] |
